In 1885, as Easter approached, the young master goldsmith Peter Carl Fabergé was tasked with creating an unusual object made of enamel, gold, and precious gems: a hen egg that contained a miniature diamond replica of the Imperial Crown and a tiny ruby pendant. Tsar Alexander III wanted to surprise his wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna, with a personalised birthday present that would cheer her up. At a time when political violence was escalating in Russia, she missed her home in Denmark. The gift was meant to remind her of the ivory egg, her favourite bauble from the Danish Royal Collection, and to mark the symbolism of rebirth during Easter.
Fabergé’s Imperial Egg was a masterpiece, and the Empress was simply enchanted. Her reaction sparked a long tradition of beautifully crafted birthday eggs that often incorporated mechanical switches to hide precious items and other surprises inside. Although the Imperial tradition faded with the Russian Revolution, similar egg objects, often made from less precious materials, are still gifted around the world on special birthdays.
Although the Tsar’s present was crafted from gold and precious stones, what truly made it valuable to Maria Feodorovna was how personal it was to her. It brought back past memories while it adhered to her own refined taste. It was custom-made just for her and presented in a ceremonial way. By following these simple rules, birthday gifts, no matter their monetary value, can be transformed into little treasures meant to be cherished for life.
