THE LEMONS OF SICILY
The sunny days are finally back. We reminisce the vibrant colours of the Sicilian summer – vibrant golden hues mix with the Mediterranean blue. The bright colours activate all of our senses. We are reminded of the fresh smell of lemons carried with the summer breeze as we cruise the narrow streets of Palermo. A white Roman temple appears in the background.
Sicilian Motifs
The “lemons of Sicily” wrapping paper is designed to transform any present into a thoughtful gift. Inspired by the vibrant atmosphere of southern Italy, it incorporates various motifs that form the Sicilian landscape.
At the forefront, the Sicilian lemon, “Femminello Siracusano”, a variety that grows all year round. For the locals, the Sicilian lemon is more than a culinary ingredient; it is part of their culture. It decorates their streets and yards, it adds flavour and aroma to their dishes, and even inspires their pottery art.
Pottery is a craft the Sicilians have mastered centuries ago. Sicilian ceramics are bold and colourful, inspired by the local landscape. In Sciacca and Caltagirone, ceramic vases, plates, and tiles are painted in deep blues and bright yellows, balancing the vividity of the sun with the calming nature of the Mediterranean Sea.
The ceramic tiles in particular, a motif incorporated into our wrapping paper design, bear many similarities to the Portuguese and Spanish tin-glazed ceramic tiles known as “azulejo”. They do not only cover the floors and walls of home interiors; Sicilian tiles decorate staircases and water springs. In Caltagirone, the Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte, a 130-meter-long staircase, features colourful tiles with motifs spanning from the 9th to the 19th century AD.
Another distinct motif is the Corinthian column. Proud and ornate, “Colonna Corinzia” is found in buildings of both Roman and Baroque architecture in Sicily. Carved acanthus leaves decorate its capital, reminding us of the herbs forming the Mediterranean landscape.
Wrapping Paper Sparks Summer Memories
“Lemons of Sicily” is the most vibrant wrapping design for a summer occasion. Although it combines different motifs and shades, the colour that stands out is no other than yellow – a personal favourite of mine. It is bright, vivid, and energizing, just like the sun or the tangy aroma of lemon zest.
The wrapping paper is designed to not only increase curiosity by covering the gift’s contents, but to also spark joy and excitement. Every motif is curated by Manuela Menzi through the art of collage. Individual objects – a lemon, a tile, a column… - are combined to form a unique design.
The “lemons of Sicily” come in a set of three convenient pre-cut sheets. The unique motifs are printed in full colour on uncoated offset-paper (100 g/m2) in Germany.
